Colored Contact Lens Care: Do’s, Don’ts and Daily Habits
Share
Beautiful lenses mean nothing if your eyes don’t feel good. Proper care is the secret behind clear, comfortable wear—especially for colored contacts. Here’s a simple routine to protect both your eyes and your lenses.
1. Your Daily Routine in 6 Steps
-
Wash and dry your hands.
Use mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and dry with a lint-free towel. -
Check the lens.
Make sure it’s not inside-out, torn or dry. The edges should curve smoothly like a bowl. -
Put lenses in before makeup.
This prevents powder or mascara from getting trapped under the lens. -
Remove lenses before taking off makeup.
Cleansing oils and removers can stick to lenses and cause discomfort. -
Clean and store (for reusable lenses).
Gently rub the lens with fresh multipurpose solution for a few seconds, then place it in a clean case filled with new solution. -
Let your eyes rest.
Give yourself some lens-free time each day, especially if you sit in front of screens for long hours.
2. Big Don’ts You Should Never Ignore
-
❌ Don’t rinse lenses or cases with tap water or saliva.
-
❌ Don’t top up old solution—always replace with fresh liquid.
-
❌ Don’t wear lenses longer than the recommended schedule.
-
❌ Don’t share lenses, even just for a quick selfie.
-
❌ Don’t keep wearing them if your eyes turn red or painful.
If irritation doesn’t go away after removing the lenses, seek professional help.
3. When Is It Time to Throw Lenses Away?
Each lens type has a replacement schedule:
-
Daily: throw away after each use.
-
Monthly: up to 30 days after opening, not 30 wears.
-
Longer-term lenses: follow the brand’s instructions strictly.
Even if a lens “looks fine”, old materials can hold deposits and bacteria that your eyes cannot see—but can definitely feel.
4. Colored Lenses Need the Same Care as Clear Lenses
Some people think colored contacts are “just cosmetic”, but they are still medical devices that touch the surface of your eye. With good hygiene and the right fit, they can be just as safe and comfortable as clear lenses—and just a lot more fun.
